Monuments

The magnificent location of the Hotel Fenice Palace is a special advantage for its guests, who find themselves just a few steps from all the monuments and greatest tourist attractions of Florence.

Palazzo Medici Riccardi

From our looking, looking out of the windows that face Via Martelli, you can see Palazzo Medici Riccardi, constructed following a design by Michelozzo between 1444 and 1464. The residence of the Medici for a century, it was then purchase and expanded by the Riccardi family and, today, houses the Prefecture and Provincial Administration. Immediately behind the palazzo, you will find the famous San Lorenzo Market, with its characteristic wooden carts loaded with the most varied goods and, a little further on, the meat and fruit market, a place that is certainly worth a visit!

Gallery of the Accademia

The Gallery of the Accademia is one of Florence's most famous museums. It houses Michelangelo's most famous sculptures - "David", "The Four Prisoners" and the "Pietà of Palestina" - and various paintings.

San Marco Museum

When in Florence, it's worth visiting the San Marco Museum, an old Dominican convent that was restored and expanded to its present form in the 14th century at the request of Cosimo (the Elder) de' Medici with the assistance of his favorite architect, Michelozzo. The museum offers visitors an example of a perfectly preserved 15th-century convent, with a brightly-lit library, a real jewel of the Renaissance.

Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge constructed during the Roman period (middle of the 1st century BC), one of the symbols of Florence and the only one spared from bombardment by the Germans in 1944. Damaged several times by floods - including the one of November 4, 1333, which swept it away - the bridge was rebuilt in 1345 thanks to rent from the butcher's, greengrocer and wool shops. Since the 16th century, by order of Grand Duke Ferdinand I the Ponte Vecchio shops house goldsmiths, silversmiths and bancherotti (jewelers).

In addition...

As you stroll through Florence, you shouldn't pass up an opportunity to visit: Piazza Signoria, the Bargello, the Church of Santa Croce, Palazzo Pitti and its magnificent Boboli Garden, across the romantic Ponte Vecchio.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore

It is the largest church in Florence, a Gothic cathedral constructed in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio and embellished with a Renaissance dome designed by Brunelleschi. After Arnolfo's death, work on the church called “del Fiore” – (the flower), the symbol of the city of Florence - were entrusted to Giotto, who worked almost exclusively on the bell tower, a masterpiece considered to be among the most beautiful in Italy. In front, you will find the Baptistery, with a beautiful pointed dome covered with precious mosaics of Byzantine inspiration and the three bronze doors that open on the sides of the building.

Basilica of San Lorenzo

The primitive church assumed a Romanesque form around the year 1000 and was later rebuilt by Brunelleschi in 1442. Its important features include the splendid Old Sacristy decorated by Donatello and the New Sacristy, built by Michelangelo in 1524 as a funerary chapel for the Medici family. From the church you can enter the Cloister of San Lorenzo (1427) – another work by Brunelleschi - where you will find the entrance to the Laurentian Library designed by Michelangelo.
